The Sleeping Giant Has Awakened*

Beck has a red neck, and if I had a
poisoned pen,
I’d give it to him
in the neck (figuratively, or literally).
But the power of the pen
Is a has-been.
Inside, outside, the mob
grows stronger.
Pious pricks grow longer.
Fundamental balls grow bigger.
They preach right and might,
by soundbyte,
and boy, do they ever
hate that nigger.
——
*For Glen Beck and his most ardent followers on the occasion of Beck’s receipt of the key to Mount Vernon, Washington, September 26, 2009. Written in a moment of despair.

Olbermann Takes Congress to the Woodshed…

… for a sound thrashing.

Those of you with… um, eyes and ears might have noticed there’s a bit of a hubbub going on over in Washington D.C. over health care.

The Democrats and Obama are trying to get a government run public option health care plan passed that would serve to compete with the current, private health care corporations.

The Republicans and some Blue Dog Democrats are trying to strip the public option out of the bill, and are delaying the vote until after the summer recess.

Why is this happening?  Why is it that, of all the industrialized nations in the world, America is the only one without a socialized health care plan that’s available to all?  Why is it that helping and healing fellow Americans is seen as an evil thing?  How is it that the word “socialism” can be used as an evil buzz-word when we already have socialized roads, fire departments, police, military, air traffic control, park service, FDA, EPA, and on and on?  How is it that Medicaid, Medicare and the Veterans Administration are socialized health care that we already have, but are not options for most of us?

Why?  Because the insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies have become so entrenched in the American economy, psyche and political structure that it’s going to take an act of Flying Spaghetti Monster to extract them.  Or… an act of Congress.  Which is why the insurance and pharmaceutical companies are dumping truckloads of their colossal earnings into disinformation, lies, fear mongering and, most importantly, buying politicians.

So, what can we do about this?  The only weapon we have is our vote.  And the only threats we can make are that we will spend our vote elsewhere.  The first step in making that threat substantial is to expose the politicians for who they are, and who they are beholden to.  Then remind them, it’s not the dollars that matter, it’s the vote.

With that in mind, watch this Keith Olbermann Special Comment from last night.  Mark those names, and if you have a vote to spend for them, let them know you’re taking it elsewhere.

The Public Option is only Step One.  The true goal is Single Payer health care, where you go to the hospital or your doctor, and you walk out healthy and down the cost of gas or a bus fare.

Digit Vs. Rush

Ass Clown

Ass Clown

A friend of mine recently asked if I had actually listened to Rush Limbaugh.  My quick answer was no, but I had heard him enough to know I disagree with him vehemently.  He then sent me a series of links to Rush’s transcripts to see what I thought.

Well, here’s what I think.

I may do a series of these, since he sent me a few links.  I’ll be analyzing this one.

The debate begins after the break…

I Love Sarah Haskins

Starting with Bernadette Peters in The Jerk, all the way up to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler on SNL, I’ve noticed something; funny women are hot.  I’d rather spend an evening in a vat of baby oil and scented candles with Jeanine Garafalo than Jessica Simpson any day.

Well, for those of you who agree, or even those of you who are just reading this because Digit is the greatest finger of the fist ever, allow me to introduce you to Sarah Haskins.

Sarah is, once again, proof positive that funny women are hotter.  She has a regular spot called Target: Women on Current.com’s weekly 1/2 hour show, Infomania, and it’s just about the greatest thing ever.

Here’s her latest video:

Check out the rest of her stuff here.  Some day I will marry her.

Yes We Can? Yes We DID!! But It’s Not Over Yet.

Well, it’s official.  Barack Obama will be our 44th president, and Joe Biden will be at his side.

You know, a little over a year ago, I was pulling into the parking lot of the local YMCA for a bout of racquetball with my buddy Mike, and I saw an Obama sign in the lawn of a house nearby.  It said, “Obama: United for Change.”  I’ll admit, I scoffed.  “Yeah, right,” I said, “like America is going to elect a black man.”  Today I am proud to say, I was wrong.  A little over an hour ago, I was sitting in a sports bar with a crowd of Obama supporters when MSNBC called California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii for Obama, putting him over the top.  The cheers were deafening.  Finally, I went home to watch Obama’s speech.  I cried.

Tonight has been historic, emotional, hopeful, stunning and unifying.  But it’s not over.  One of the derisive attacks of the right on Obama is that the left treats him like a messiah.  To a certain extent, they are right.  Obama fosters hope and brotherhood in a majority of us, and that’s amazing.  We need that.  But we also need to be careful.  I spent my money, my words and my vote to get this man in office because I believe what he represents and what he can do for us.  But now that he’s in, we cannot be afraid to take him to task.  We have the right to speak out against our government, but I believe it is not only a right, but a requirement that we keep the pressure on.

This is OUR country.  WE have chosen Barack Obama to be our leader because we think he’s the best person to lead us.  But he not only leads us, he serves us.  Don’t get me wrong, I have faith that he will be up to the task.  But faith isn’t enough.  Take this passion and involvement that got him elected, and KEEP IT GOING!!  If the past year and a half have taught us anything, it’s that politics can be invigorating and fascinating.  Don’t let that slide.

Now we just have to hold on until 1-20-09!!  Goodbye, GW!!

OBAMA!!!!!

The End Of Bacon

Circle-Slash-Bacon

Circle-Slash-Bacon

The editor at Taunton Fine Cooking has declared that Bacon Is Dead!!

I, for one, agree with her.  The meteoric rise (that phrase makes no sense, meteors fall…) of bacon as the King of Meats has reached full saturation, and it’s time to let up on the gas, and maybe pump the brakes a little, becasue there’s another pump that needs a break.  The heart.  You’re all going to have coronaries.

UPDATE1 – Review: Coldplay’s Viva La Vida

Even though the preorder of Viva la Vida, Coldplay’s latest release, broke the iTunes record for preorders, with the bonus tracks, the hype, Brian Eno producing, the album as a whole somewhat bites.

Viva La Vida
I am somewhat disappointed. I have listened to the full album five full times now. You can hear Eno trying to make something of this, but the album comes very short. The esoteric Eno sound is cool and all and very different from other Coldplay albums, which the critics love to write about in a positive light, but where Eno can make U2 sound downright awesome, Coldplay sounds like Coldplay trying to sound like Eno’s U2. It just misses the mark for me.

Nope, short of a few singles, the album is pretty disappointing. I like three songs.
After X&Y in 2005, fans were disappointed but were willing to wait for the next one, and after three years wait they got this pretty boring, cliche’ mess of an album.

What the hell happened in the studio? They couldn’t do better than this? Perhaps too much time in the studio? It lacks resolution. I am not satisfied. We don’t get to eat the cake. No payoff, just a few teases and then they pull off to a different angle, leaving us in the cold. Purposely, kind of, but it seems confused, like they couldn’t decide on the sounds they wanted to make – like they couldn’t decide on the name of the album.

Not a total waste, but it completely falls short of my expectations.
Four fists out of ten. Not two, like I said earlier today.  Maybe it will grow on me?

Update, July 2nd:
OK, I have given this album more time. I have to admit, the album is growing on me. I find myself hearing the music in my head at various times in the day. Some of the lamer songs, too. Ear candy, evil, evil ear candy. It’s the simple three-chord melodies that do it to me. It’s so U2-ish. Copycats bigtime, it’s hard to figure out why they get away with it.
Still, I must raise the review a little higher – it does have some good things going on in it, but I still am dissatisfied overall, dammit.
Six Fists out of ten, that’s the best I’ll do. For real this time. Dammit!
