Here’s a little gem from the “good ol’ days,” circa 1891 or so. I’ve been going through old newspapers for a couple of hours every day doing research for a little book I’m putting together and occasionally these things pop up. I would have missed it if someone hadn’t kindly circled it for me though! Did Mr. Yetzer score or fail? We’ll never know.

A customer left this at ThumbStore a while ago. I just dug it out of my computer bag and realized I haven’t posted it yet.

Says “Happy Halloween!”

Two things came to mind when I read this story.

1. That would sure take the shine off of buying a new home.

2. How bad would a neighborhood have to smell for people not to notice a human corpse rotting in a trashcan for three weeks?

I started really liking The Stones pretty late for a dude who grew up in the 60s and 70s (I think i am the oldest finger, actually, but that’s not my point here). In fact, although i did go through an afternoon of L-induced euphoric appreciation of one of their early albums, it wasn’t until I thumbed to MA and stayed with my very cool cousin Roger in the “Quahog House” at the Swamp Yankee in 1980 and heard The Stones’ album “Some Girls” that it really clicked for me.

The tune on Some Girls that pulled the trigger that made that click was the song about Keith Richards’ drug troubles up Canada way, called “Before They Make Me Run”, sung by Keith himself.

And it was the line “I wasn’t lookin’ too good but i was feelin’ real well” that really sunk the hook.

Oh, and the guitar. Man I could fucking drive to that song.

I found a cool photo of Keith in the Guardian the other day. If there is a Devil, this dude has met him.
