So we went to Pax2k8 this year. For those of you who don’t know, it’s a game convention (with a twingle of comic books) started by those boys at www.penny-arcade.com
I’m not going to get into the details, because well… it’s a lot. it’s a huge convention at this point and after 7 hours there, we still didn’t feel like we’d fully canvased it. So let’s get to the fun part.
One of the highlights of the con is nightly concerts. The first night (friday, which we were absent from) featured Jonathan Coulton and others, and I understand it was cool. The second night was Saturday, which we were privy to.
Ahhh Saturday. First up was a band called Anamanaguchi, who played basically decent early 90’s style rock with a computer playing some 8bit melodies with them. (Think early Weezer with a Nintendo synth) They were fun, but instrumental, which was… A little boring after 10 songs and being on your feet for 6 hours before.
I wish them the best hehe.
Not a video from Pax, but all the videos i did find had shitty sound, so. This is a decent representation.
Anyways! Next was Darkest of the Hillside Thickets.
They are a classic rock/metal style band. They’re awesome. Also they’re a Lovecraft inspired band, so they have lots of songs about Cthulhu. We met them, they’re from vancouver, they’re really nice guys. and they fucking rock.
First off, the only actual video they’ve done, for a nice cover:
THey don’t really have anything on youtube, per se, but:
The singer wear awesome ‘the chained one’ garb, the lead guitarist has a lurker tentacle-y suit, the bass player and other guitar play have rad satyr leggings and horns and they pull it off without it seeming cheesy. amazing, no?!?
I would highly recommend getting their albums, I enjoy it muchly and they’re really fucking nice people. Support them!!!
Anyways, we’re getting to the meat of this post now. Or rather, why i started this post in the first place.
So you may know MC Frontalot. If not, let me show you a few fun things:
Remember Zork?
So the Front is a nerdcore rapper, essentially the godfather of nerdcore rap, and well…. damn he’s just a nice guy. We ended up chatting with him for a while, got him to sign the new yet-to-be released cd, and just hung out for a bit. Also he invited us to be in the video shoot for his new video, which we were totally down for. The song is called “Wallflower” and well, it basically is a tune about people who dance by themselves, when no one else is watching. So lots of bad dancing ensued, also lots of fun, and the Front also played a fucking rad show after Thickets. The video will be out in the next few weeks, I’ll be sure to try and remember to put it up here.
Sadly enough, we were so tired by the time Minibosses came on (about 1:10am) we only stayed for a few songs. It was sad, i love them, but FUCK i was tired. And Bjo was fallin asleep on her feets. Next time we go to Pax we’ll have a better game plan.
All in all, a good Saturday experience, fun for all.
Oh and a Minibosses video: (Not at PAX, but you get the idea)
Oh also Wil Wheaton was there and waved at me when I waved at him.
Also Dr Steel was there and waved at me when I flashed him the horns.
(edited for… avatar? eh?)

I got eaten by way too many grues.
Do any of you guys know if there is a Zork 2 emulator or program, webbased or otherwise, out there that will work on a mac?

All Zork and Infocom “emulators” are basically clients that run on various hardware platforms, from Macs and Windows to Mobile Phones and servers. The most reknown is Frotz, one version of which is here:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/13611
If you do a search for “Frotz” and “Infocom”, you will find an enormous amount of clients to run Zork on. Of course, then you have to get the datafiles…

I still haven’t done my ComicCon Day 4 post yet, but here’s a pic of Thumb with Frontalot.
He was on the phone and took exactly 4 seconds out of his call to pose with me.
